Four Popular Options for a Smile Makeover
Every smile makeover procedure is personalized for the patient. However, there are some popular options that are more frequently requested by patients and often recommended by dentists. This review discusses four of the most popular options for a smile makeover to transform the beauty, health, and function of your smile.
Common smile makeover treatment options
While there are more than a dozen of possible procedures a dentist may recommend during a smile makeover, several of the most commonly recommended procedures include professional, in-office teeth whitening, dental porcelain veneers, tooth-colored or metal crowns, and dental implants for teeth replacement.
Professional teeth whitening is a great way to address minor to moderate teeth stains. This is typically an in-office procedure, although professional take-home whitening kits may be an option as well. Professional teeth whitening can brighten teeth by as much as seven or eight shades, which is far more effective than store-bought kits. The results can also last for well over a year as well. For severe stains, the dentist may recommend dental veneers or dental bonding (see below) to ensure the ideal shade is achieved.
Dental veneers are thin porcelain layers that are fixed over the visible surface of front teeth. They can fix a range of cosmetic issues, including but not limited to severe teeth stains, teeth chips and cracks, short teeth, uneven teeth, and mild teeth misalignments. Dental bonding is also similar to veneers in purpose, although it does not offer the same level of benefit as veneers.
Dental crowns offer a way to repair tooth damage. This could be in the form of a chipped tooth, tooth crack, teeth worn down by grinding, and more. Crowns cover the entire tooth. For smile makeover purposes, the dentist is likely to use a tooth-colored crown, although they are not as strong and damage resistant as a metal alloy crown, so proper care is essential. For small tooth repairs that do not require the entire tooth to be covered, the dentist may recommend an inlay or an onlay. These are similar to crowns, although they only cover part of the tooth and not the entire tooth.
Teeth replacement is a very common treatment for a smile makeover. Often, dentists recommend dental implants as they are stronger and may feel more natural than alternative solutions. However, they cost more and require a longer and more extensive treatment process. Dental crowns can replace one tooth, a section of teeth, or an entire row of missing teeth. A fixed bridge, partial denture, or a complete denture may be an option as well, depending on the number of teeth being replaced and the patient’s specific goals.
