Dental Implant Options: Missing Teeth Replacement Solutions

Dental Implant Benicia, CA

There are dental implant options out there that can serve as missing teeth replacement solutions. When you suffer from having one or more missing teeth, you might not have the smile that you want. Not only is it normal to have aesthetic concerns, but missing teeth can also cause you some other dental problems.

Read on to discover the different implant options available to you and the techniques behind them.

Types of implants and preparation techniques

There are many available options for implants. Implants come in different heights, sizes and types. It is important to understand the differences between them.

Endosteal implants

Endosteal implants are usually made of titanium and are shaped similarly to small screws. A dentist places these into the jawbone. It is normal to use these types of dental implants in most surgeries. Endosteal implants will bond with the jawbone to create the solid base needed for the abutments and eventual restorations.

Subperiosteal implants

Dentists sometimes use subperiosteal implants when a patient does not have a healthy jawbone for an endosteal implant. In some cases, patients can go through a bone augmentation process that can build up the bone. However, these specific dental implants are used when the person either does not want the procedure or cannot get it.

If this is the case, then the dentist places the subperiosteal implants under the gums — either on top of or above the jawbone. Then, the dentist attaches posts to the frame. Just like with endosteal implants, artificial teeth are mounted on the posts.

Yet, when a patient’s jawbone cannot support the implants and they still want the endosteal options, there are some techniques available. These can rebuild new bone and restore a patient’s natural jawline. They will also offer a stable foundation for the new implant supported teeth.

Bone augmentation

This procedure involves regenerating or restoring the bone in a patient’s jaw to allow implant support. Using growth factors and bone additives to fortify the jawbone will typically achieve the desired results.

Sinus lift

Sometimes, this is called sinus elevation or sinus augmentation. The procedure involves adding new bone beneath the sinus. This is used in situations where the natural bone has deteriorated. Missing upper teeth in the back of the mouth typically cause this deterioration.

Ridge expansion

Sometimes a patient’s jaw is not wide enough for proper implant support. If this is the case, then a small ridge or space is created along the top of the jaw. Then, the dentist adds new bone graft material to the ridge.

Safeguarding implants

The success and longevity of a patient’s implants depend on how seriously they take their oral hygiene. Brushing and flossing are important. So is keeping up with professional cleanings and regular checkups.
