Dental Bridges in Cosmetic Dentistry Treatment

When a multiple-tooth loss happens, one of the options available in cosmetic dentistry for dental restoration is dental bridges. Every tooth plays a crucial role regarding speech, eating and ensuring proper dental alignment. Tooth loss does not happen to everyone, but when it happens, the lost tooth must be replaced to keep the mouth functioning properly. Read on to learn about the use of dental bridges to replace missing teeth.

About dental bridges

A dental bridge is a tooth replacement option that connects artificial teeth (pontic) to nearby natural teeth (abutment). Dental bridges can be attached permanently or removable. The dentist can place a fixed bridge by either using abutment teeth to hold the prosthetic teeth or with direct bonding. Removable bridges are connected with metal clasps or precision attachments. They are strong enough to be used as a replacement for molars.

Fixed bridges are removable, but only by the dental professional, while the patient can remove removable bridges for cleaning. However, fixed bridges are more stable than removable ones.

Dental bridges are used when there are existing teeth on both sides of the gap left by the missing tooth. The drawback of regular bridges is that the dentist will need to scrape down the enamel of adjacent teeth to create space for the crowns that will be placed over it. Since enamel is not regenerative, the affected tooth will always need crown protection, even if the patient opts for another tooth replacement option.

Why choose dental bridges?

Missing teeth are important to the appearance of the smile and face, as well as to oral health. Every tooth works together to function effectively. Missing teeth impair dental function and put undue stress on the gums and other teeth, resulting in several unpleasant dental issues.

Missing teeth can also increase the risk of gum disease. A lost tooth can also cause speech disorder, as patients may find it difficult to pronounce certain sounds. It is advisable to replace missing teeth as soon as possible by undergoing cosmetic dentistry treatment, and a dental bridge can be an effective tooth replacement.

Attaching the dental bridge

Placing a dental bridge may require between two to three dental appointments. At the first appointment, the dentist will prepare the natural teeth on both sides of the gap by removing part of the first layer of the teeth.

The bridge must be produced accurately for correct bite and alignment. Therefore, the dentist will take impressions of the teeth and forward it to the lab that will produce the bridge. The dental bridge can be constructed with porcelain, metals or a combination of the materials. The common practice is to bond porcelain to metal alloys.

After the bridge is ready, the dentist will fix the prosthetic teeth in the gap and place dental crowns over the natural teeth to provide support for the bridge,

Final note

The dentist can restore missing teeth by using dental bridges. As a cosmetic dentistry treatment, the dentist’s goal is to provide a tooth replacement option that is cosmetically appealing and fully functional.
