Smile Makeover

A General Dentist Discusses Smile Makeover Options

With the innovation in dental technology, tools, materials and techniques, smile makeover procedures are a lot more natural-looking. When looking to improve certain aspects of your smile and give your teeth a ‘facelift,’ it is best to talk to a general dentist about the various cosmetic and restorative treatments that can help. It helps to know the options included in the treatment so there is an expectation beforehand.

Smile makeover options

Some of the options available in a smile makeover procedure include the following.

Teeth whitening

This is perhaps one of the fastest ways to drastically change the look of the smile and increase the patient’s confidence. The procedure removes stubborn stains or discoloration to restore the natural look of the smile. The teeth can get stained or discoloration from factors such as medications, aging and certain drinks and foods. Having the procedure done by the dentist is advisable because they can get quality and lasting results and provide measures against side effects such as teeth sensitivity.

Composite bonding

Bonding is the use of tooth-colored composite resin to restore the appearance of a chipped, decayed, fractured or discolored tooth. It can change the length, shape and size of the tooth and may be used as a cosmetic substitute for amalgam fillings. Bonding is one of the easiest, most inexpensive and quickest options in a smile makeover process.

The composite resin can be used to fill cavities, cover stains, fill gaps and repair cracks on the teeth and make the smile whole again, which makes it a versatile smile makeover procedure. The dentist will shape and polish the restoration, so it matches the rest of the teeth. It is a cost-effective alternative to porcelain veneers, though not as durable.

Porcelain veneers

Veneers are thin shells, usually created from porcelain, designed to fit on the front side of the tooth. Veneers offer a quick way to improve the color, shape and alignment of the teeth. A veneer can help if the tooth has intrinsic stains that cannot be removed by teeth whitening. Additionally, the dentist can use it to close small gaps between the teeth or make a slightly crooked tooth look aligned with the remaining teeth.

Since they are thin, only a thin layer fitting the thickness of the veneer will be removed from the tooth. Some veneer options do not even require tooth preparation.

Dental implants

A missing or severely damaged tooth can make the teeth look less appealing, thus resulting in a need for a smile makeover. The dentist can restore damaged or missing teeth through the placement of dental implants. This option is the most natural-looking and durable procedure available for tooth replacement. Implant restorations look and function like regular teeth and can last several decades with proper maintenance.
