A Family Dentist Warns: Don’t Ignore an Abscessed Tooth!

Ignoring an abscessed tooth is the wrong thing to do according to a family dentist. In fact, all dentists say the same thing. Of course, since most cases of abscessed tooth entail significant pain, it is hard not to notice. If you suspect you might have this dental problem, you need to seek help right away. Otherwise, you could put your tooth and overall health at risk.

What is an abscessed tooth?

As explained by a family dentist, an abscessed tooth is a sign of a potentially serious problem. While it sounds disgusting, this is a pocket filled with pus. The abscess develops in response to an infection. That means without dental care, the infection could worsen or spread. Many people do not realize that this kind of infection can travel through the bloodstream. When that happens, it can make a person sick.

What causes an abscessed tooth?

Although an abscessed tooth is the result of an infection, people should know what causes the infection. Periodontal disease is the most common. Also called gum disease, this happens when someone does not properly clean their teeth. Over time, bone density decreases and the tooth rots. Without bone to protect the roots, bacteria lead to an infection and then, an abscess. Good oral hygiene is critical in keeping a person’s mouth healthy.

A family dentist goes on to explain that other things that can cause an abscessed tooth. For instance, consuming foods and beverages high in sugar and carbohydrates lead to decay. Once cavities form, bacteria get inside. Again, this can lead to an abscess. Therefore, people need to be careful about what they eat and drink. Even a fractured tooth from trauma is at risk.

A family dentist explains the signs

For most people, it is nearly impossible to ignore the signs of an abscessed tooth. The primary symptom is pain. Typically, individuals experience constant throbbing. If left untreated, that will turn into a sharp, stabbing pain. Other signs include sensitivity to hot and cold, fever, bad breath and a swollen jaw. Usually, chewing becomes unbearable.

How is an abscessed tooth treated?

The treatment for this dental problem depends on several factors. Included are the severity of the damage to the tooth and the degree of the infection. Before determining the right course of action, a family dentist will perform an examination. The dental professional will then take X-rays to confirm suspicions.

One of the most common solutions for an abscessed tooth is a root canal. With this, the family dentist numbs the area and then drills a hole in the tooth. Next, the dentist would lacerate and drain the abscess. The dental professional then reshapes the root canal, followed by cleaning and disinfecting the tooth. After sealing the roots and canal, the dentist caps the tooth with a crown.

Another option involves extracting the tooth. Remember, the family dentist will do everything possible to save the tooth. However, if it is too far gone, pulling it may be the only option. Afterward, the patient can opt for a bridge or dental implant to fill the space. If the patient has infected gums rather than the tooth, the dentist will refer them to a periodontist.

Pay attention to the signs

If you start to have pain in a tooth, contact a family dentist right away. With that, there is a good chance of saving the tooth. Otherwise, you would need the correct treatment performed. Regardless, the key is to stop the infection so that it does not spread.
