6 Things You Should Know About Getting a Dental Crown

Many Americans choose a dental crown to cover large fillings and broken, discolored or missing teeth. The American College of Prosthodontics reports that placing dental crowns is the most common restorative procedure in the United States.

What to know before getting a dental crown

Whatever your reason for considering a dental crown, you probably have some questions. Here are six things you should know.

What is a crown?

A dental crown, also known as a cap, is a uniquely molded shell created to fit perfectly over a tooth. Once your dentist fits the dental crown in place, the cap will cover the entire visible surface of the tooth to the gum line. The tooth can no withstand bacteria and other irritants.

Crowns can last up to 15 years, depending on the dental habits of the recipient.

Why do people need crowns?

Crowns are helpful for a variety of dental conditions. At times, a tooth with a bad cavity requires a large filling. In this case, a dentist will often recommend a crown to protect the filling and stabilize the tooth.

You can also get a dental crown for cosmetic purposes. Many people choose dental crowns to cover discolored teeth after years of drinking dark beverages and smoking cigarettes.

Some other reasons for getting a dental crown include misshapen teeth, gaps between teeth or placement of a dental implant or bridge to replace missing teeth.

What are crowns made of?

Although gold or other types of metal alloys were once the most common materials used in making dental crowns, modern dentists offer a greater variety of materials.

Crowns may consist of:

  • Stainless steel
  • Metals like alloys with gold, platinum, cobalt-chromium or nickel-chromium
  • Porcelain-fused-to-metal
  • All-resin
  • All-ceramic or all-porcelain

The Dental Crown Process

Getting a dental crown typically requires two appointments. The initial crown appointment involves preparing the tooth for permanent placement of the crown. The dentist will also take a mold of the tooth during this visit. The dentist will place a temporary crown during this visit.

About two weeks later, you will have your second visit for permanent crown placement.

The dentist will fit the dental crown and make additional adjustments to ensure comfort. Next, the dentist will permanently attach the crown using dental adhesive.

Materials matter

The cost of crowns depends on several factors. The type of material used is the primary determinant of price. Porcelain tends to cost less than other materials, but it is best to speak with your dentist to determine the best material for the price.

What about dental insurance

Dental insurance provides coverage for crowns based on the purpose of the crown and the type of material. Most companies offer assistance for crowns that address a medical need. Insurance rarely covers anything considered cosmetic. Benefits per tooth rarely exceed 50 percent, and most companies have an annual maximum.
